The Challenge

The Hopi and Navajo reservations face water scarcity due to a number of factors, including drought, groundwater pumping, and contamination:

Drought
Groundwater pumping: Coal companies and others have pumped groundwater from the aquifer shared by the Hopi and Navajo tribes for decades, which has reduced the flow of water to Hopi villages
Deforestation
Contamination: Rainwater fills the aquifer with contaminants like arsenic, uranium, and vanadium from strip mining operations, landfills, and pesticides
